The National Trust commissioned an archaeological evaluation to closely monitor invasive ground works to ensure any  archaeology present was fully recorded. Under the terms of Historic England’s Management Agreement it was agreed to undertake hand extraction of reeds within the eastern arm and southern section of the moat. 

The project was approved following a detailed methodology statement and a written scheme of investigation.  The results formed the basis of a comprehensive   archaeological report.
